Principles of Tantra -1913 erstmals erschienen, handelt es sich hier um einen Klassiker der westlichen Rezeption des Tantrismus. Der Autor entwickelte in den 30 Jahren, die er in Indien lebte, wie kaum ein anderer Europäer ein tiefes Verständnis für die indische Kultur. Er studierte bei indischen Gelehrten die Shastras und trug wesentlich zu einem positiven Verständnis des Tantrismus sowohl in Indien als auch im Westen bei. Das Buch gibt eine ausführliche Einführung in die philosophischen und religiösen Hintergründe des Tantrismus in der indischen Kultur. Das bekannteste Werk des Autors ist The serpent power (deutsch Die Schlangenkraft). Weitere Bücher von ihm sind: The garland of letters, The world as power, The great liberation, Hymns to the goddess und Sakti and Sakta.
